In which P & K fly to Russia

Day 1

Got up at crack of dawn - 5 - and caught taxi for 8.40 flight to Domodedovo. Cost us £520, which is pretty good. . We had booked the visas through Russia Direct and they were incredibly quick, but we had very little notice and couldn't take advantage of their 7 working day service - so that was another 300 quid. We both got really excited at the sight of real snow from our window – a blanket of white against a barren landscape – we were more like children than grown ups!

Anyhoo, the flight was really quick, arrived early and the breakfast was hot & wholesome, so well done BA.

I ordered a taxi to take us to our hotel via Olga and the driver was very nice. We were so amazed to see that all the white was mostly sludge when we walked out the airport. But for all that it was incredibly exciting to be in such an amazingly foreign country, so alien that even the language was unintelligible

I had booked the Hotel Milan with Expedia on the recommendation of A&E..I was offered 2 prices - one for a basic double room (1095) and a suite (1625). I was really worried that the cheaper room would be a box room, but it was all we could afford.

The taxi driver dropped us at the door (wouldn't accept a tip) and a beautifully uniformed doorman took our luggage. The hotel is nearly brand new and is really very lush. We went up to our room and found it to be excellent value for money (compared to any other l found on the internet). The room is fine, space enough for a large dressing table and a small table and 2 chairs. The bathroom is very clean and modern with lots of complementary bits and bobs. Only disappointment is that even though I asked for a double bed and repeated it at the desk, we got 2 singles. I did think of asking for a change, but in the end we just pushed the beds together.

We explored this evening. The hotel shop has some lovely things but only Prince Charles could afford them
